Will China Break Up Like The Soviet Union ?

In 1917 VI Lenin launched the Communist revolution and the Tsar was overthrown. He thus founded a monlithe state which after the Second World War became a power centre against the western world and the United States. Leaders like Stalin, Khrushchev and Brezhnev built up a mighty Soviet empire that encompassed a large part of the Asia and Europe. It became a threat to the United States and always countered that country in all spheres and arenas in the world.

But the internal contradictions came to the fore and the mighty Soviet state collapsed and broke up into 18 separate nations. The

exit of the Soviet Union left the United States as the predominant power in the world. But in the 21st century the United is now accosted with another monolith communist state -China. China is fast becoming a world power house and a counterpoise to the United States. It has over shadowed India and is the dominant power in Asia. In addition it has the worlds largest standing army and a nuclear arsenal that is global.

The question that is on a lot many peoples lips is that will China go the Soviet way? For China also has severe contradictions in its society. Some of these are inherent in a totalitarian state that follows the principles of communism. Firstly take the case of Tibet. This is the bone in the Chinese throat. A massive cultural invasion has been launched and the Tibetan people suppressed. With

a weak India on its borders the Chinese have repressed the Tibetans with guns and bayonets. Tibetan girls are often carried away to Chinese army camps and the age old practice of Monks and their initiation severey restricted. The teachings of the Dalai Lama are banned and he is dubbed an 'Indian agent'. In this scenario the United States and the world have a pivotal role to play. China must be made to recognize Tibetan rights and grant a measure of autonomy to the people there.

The Chinese society is also greatly regulated. The right of travel to work in a different place is not heard off and a permit has become the hall mark of the Chinese society. The communist party has tolerated no dissent and has come down heavily on dissenters as it did in the Tiananmen Square massacre.

History has shown that such societies are invariably destroyed by internal contradictions. I have no doubt that the next few decades these contradictions will surface and China will have to let go of Tibet and also grant greater representation and freedom to its own people. But till that happens we will have to live with an aggressive nation that may flex its muscles. The USA as the leader of the free world has to bolster India as counter to China till the Chinese themselves reform-which they ultimately will
