Rahul Gandhi belongs to an illustrious family. His great grandfather Jwaharlal Nehru was a towering figure of Indian polity and his father was the prime minister of India. There was a time when the Nehru -Gandhi dynasty ruled India for most of the early 42 years after independence.
Misfortune over took the family as his grand mother Indira Gandhi was assissinated and his father Rajiv Gandhi was blown up by a Tamil suicide bomber. In such a scenario the mantle of leader ship descended to Mrs Sonia Gandhi the widow of Rajiv Gandhi.
The Congress party is in decline in Utter Pradeshfor the last 2 decades where partisan politics and caste have come to the fore. In this atmosphere a state election is just completed. The Congress party is making a vigorous attempt to come back into reckonning under Rahul Gandhi. Rahul is 42 years old and a bachelor and he has taken on himself the onerous task of leading the Congress party.
The stakes are high as a win in UP can well pave the way for the Congress to come to power at the center under its own steam. UP is important as it sends the largest
Thus Rajiv is on his toes as he campaigns hard for himself and the Congress party. There seems to be an effect and the Congress will certainly better the 20 seats it won at the last elections to the state assembly. But a marginal improvement will not help and the Congress to make an impact must win close to a100 seats. In case that happens , there is every chance that the Congress will do better in the parliamentary polls due in 2014. This is the acid test for the young Gandhi. In case he loses there is a chance that he will himself disappear from the scene.
The stakes are high and Rahul in the true Gandhi-Nehru tradition has travelled far and wide and campaigned hard. It will now have to be seen how he fares and the eyes of the political world will await the UP election results with great interest. It is the battleground of India.
