Understanding Cholesterol And Its Relation With Food

Everybody asks, what is Cholesterol? Well it’s a waxy soft and pliable substance which is found in all body cells and is carried through the blood stream. It must be mentioned that this is an important part of cell membrane lining in a human body. Cholesterol is important for the body as it is the regulatory substance for hormones and many body functions. Thus one can see that Cholesterol has an important role in the body. However there is a negative side to it and that is that it needs to be regulated. In case it goes over a threshold

limit the chance of veins getting clogged and a heart attack can destroy the body
Some facts of Cholesterol are worth recounting here. Do remember that Cholesterol cannot dissolve in blood. Thus it remains in the blood stream. The carrier of cholesterol in the blood stream is via a substance called lipoproteins. This in turn has LDL (low-density) and HDL (high-density) lipo proteins. Out of these two lipoproteins, LDL is the more dangerous and in case the level of LDL increases then it can clog the arteries with a resultant heart or brain stroke. LDL blocks the passage in the arteries and increases the risk of fatal health problems.
HDL on the other hand has a beneficial effect as it carries the cholesterol to the liver and not towards the heart and brain. HDL is supposed to regulate the excess cholesterol in the body and hence, high level of HDL is good for health.
Foods that Lower Cholesterol Naturally
Cholesterol is thus a double edged sword. It is needed by the body, but excess can be harmful. The source of
Cholesterol is from the body itself and also from the foods we eat. Foods consisting of animal products and foods high in saturated fats are a major source of cholesterol. In real terms the liver produces 1000 milligram cholesterol every day and there is no requirement of more cholesterol.
But humans are fond of meats and eggs and they contain cholesterol. By eating such foods the cholesterol level will certainly rise up. Hence for people with high cholesterol it will be best to obviate such foods. But certain foods can help in lowering of cholestrl. These consists of
a) Apples .They are rich in anti-oxidants and healthy fiber. Both these constituents of apples can help reduce bad cholesterol. So a good recommendation is to eat one apple every day. The good old adage an apple a day keeps disease at bay certainly has some element of truth in it.
b) Avocado: The second food is avocado. It does contain some fat, but this fat does not cause any problem as it is in monosaturated form and will help to lower the bad cholesterol in the body. Avocado is a natural cholesterol burner.
Lastly an exercise regime for the body is a must. A work out every day even for 15 minutes will go a long way to keep cholesterol at bay. One last question which a reader may have is as to what is the dangerous level of Cholesterol? Generally a reading below 200 mg in the blood stream should be no cause for worry.
