The Training Institutions Of The Indian Air Force.

 The Indian Air Force is the 4th largest Air Force in the world witha fighter strength of nearly 1000 first line planes and 45 squadrons. To cater for this vast force the IAF has set up training institutes all over India. These cater to training of  officers from the ab-initio stage to the advanced stage. Some of the important training institutes are mentioned below

a) Air Force Technical College. This is located at Bangalore in the suberb of Jallahali. It is the oldest technical training institute and was set up in collabration with the Royal Air Force. The college is headed

by a Commandant  and trains officers for induction as engineers in the IAF. The course is of 18 months duration and on completion officers are granted commissions in the IAF.  The College also imparts training in drill and firing as well as professional technical  subjects. 

Nornally the entry is restricted to full fledged engineeers  in any disciple  of engineering. The College is a premier training institute of the IAF and many foreign officers also attend its training schedules.

b) Air Force Academy.  This is located at Dindigul, close to the city of Hyderabad.  The  academy trains officers as pilots for the IAF. It also trains Non-technical officers  for a ground duty role. The main thrust of the Academy is on flying traing and the candidates are selected after undergoing testing by the UPSC( Union Public Servces Commission) through a nation wide selection test and interview.

All pilots commence flying on the


basic trainer aircraft. The best pilots are allotted  in the fighter bomber stream and the others are inducted into the Helicopter and Transport scheme.   In case a pilot fails to get his wings, he is seconded to the Ground duty branch.

c) Flying Instructors School. This is located at  Tambaram  close to Chennai. It is one of the Premier Training schools for flyers of the IAF. It conducts 5 months course to qualified pilots to become flying instructors. It is considered the home of flying and is a career course.

d) Air Force Adminstrative College.   This college is located at Coimbatore in the state of  Tamil Nadu. the college is a premier training college for Management studies in the IAF. It trains junior officers for command and control courses. In addition Non technical officers undergo advanced course in Logistics and Accounts management.

There are some other training  institues like NAV and Signals School at Begumpet, AirfOrce Intelligence Schol at Pune, Air Force Police School at Bangalore among others. Officers are also detailed for advanced joint services courses at DSSC( defense Services Staff College), IAT( Institute of Armament Training) and NDC( National Defence College)
