George Bush will find it difficult to erase his name from the history books as a war mongerer and for starting an unprovoked war in Iraq. George Bush will also be held responsible for bringing untold hardship to the men who served and died there as well as for destabilizing Iraq. Hee will also be held accountable for a prohibtive war that damaged the US economy.
As per the most authentic account, 4885 US service men died in Iraq ina 10 year occupation and war. These were needless deaths that served no purpose. Iraq is as volatile as ever and morethan likely to slip into a alliance with Iran. We must remember that 60% of the Iraqi population is Shia, who feel a close affinity with the Shia majority Iran. The US invasion thus achieved nothing except to strengthen Iran. Saddam Hussein for all his faults had one thing going in has favor, he faced Shia Iran and kept the hard line Muslim extremists at bay in Iraq.
The toll in Iraq is not related to just deaths of US service men who were young and I suppose not meant as fodder for the policies of George Bush. But along with the deaths, there are other problems as well. Thousands of US troops coming home are finding it difficult toget employment. In addition 20% of the troops suffer from emotional and traumatic disorders. This is the legacy of the Iraq war.
US troops who fought in Iraq with the gun have now to adjust to civil life. This is not easy. In addition the 35,000 maimed and injured soldiers are also there. There is no special employment for them The home department is coming out with ads like ' hire a veteran' but its not easy as the US economy is creaking witha 3 trillion dollar deficit.
In sum the war in Iraq has pulled the US image down a notch and has given China a chance to catch up with the US. The Chinese are playing their cards shrewdly and they also control 30% of the US economy.
George Bush will go down in history as the man who started the slide of the US from a great economic power to a not so great economic power. I wonder why the sins of Bush should be pinned on the US young men and women and the economy. But that is history and men like Bush are also born that follow a meglomanicial dream even if like Samson they destroy the very pillar that brought them power.
