Samuel Colt belonged to the restless generation of the nineteenth century. He thus left home at the age of 16 and boarded a ship sailing to India. On the voyage to India, Colt was able to conceiveplans for a revolving chamber of a handgun as he observed the rotating movement of the ships wheel. On his return from this voyage Colt patented his revolver in the USA in 1836. Colt certainly had an inquisitive mind as only a genius could transform the idea of rotation of the Ships wheel to the revolver chamber.
.However the revolver did not set the sale charts on fire and Colt lost interest in his invention. But it was not long ere the US army adopted this weapon with telling effect against the Red Indians. It also came in handy in the war against Mexico.
The colt .45 also earned another nickname as the ‘peacemaker’ and the wild west legend is not complete without the .45 colt. The weapon was used by Rustlers, sheriffs and the US Army as a handgun with lethal effect. The cowboy movies of the wild west with John Wayne and others are a tribute to the .45 and have helped build a legend around the weapon. The famous Billy the kid gunfighter, was also especially adept in using the peacemaker. The colt .45 is a heavy weapon and extremely lethal. It needs a steady grip and strong forearm for successful handling. Otherwise the barrel has a tendency to jump up when fired.
Samuel colt died young at the age of 49, and did not live long enough to see the legend build up around his invention. But the .45 colt has become a legend that will forever remind us of Samuel Colt as one of the greats in the inventor’s hall of fame. Let us salute him.
