The Ottoman Turks, Berbers And White Women As Slaves

Slavery is something known and understood. Most people however associate it only with the black man. In terms of numbers perhaps it dwarfs all types of slavery, but it is perhaps not known that that at the time the Negroes were being shipped to America across the Atlantic, many North Africans and Arab were capturing Europeans. The purpose of these captures was slavery and is generally not given much importance.

But the fact of history is that Moors and their African pirates called Corsairs scoured the coasts of Europe and attacked the villages along the coast to capture white slaves.

The danger of these raids increased so much that many coastal villages in France and Corisca shifted deeper away from the coast. As long as the Moors controlled Spain, the capture of whites as slaves continued and it was reduced only once the Moors were driven from Spain.

White men and women going into slavery reads like a Ripley’s believe it or not. But the Ottoman Empire and its power were omnipotent. They controlled the entire North coast and their ships moved in the Mediterrian Sea with impunity and raided the coastal villages to spirit away young white girls and men to be slaves. Though no figures of the quantum of this trade is

available, yet it is known that hundreds of European ships and tens of coastal villages were attacked by these pirates and the Corsairs and thousands of whites went into slavery. To get an idea of the menace of this trade it is reported that from 1609-16 more than 400 ships with the British flag were captured and the crew inducted as slaves.

The Ships of the Ottoman Empire greatly prized the white women. In fact they greatly desired the blonde golden haired girls from the Slav nations of Eastern Europe. They were the subject of most raids. Thousands were captured for the harems of the Arabs. The menace continued till the 19th century and only in 1814 the European powers signed convention to outlaw the attacks of the Berbers and the Ottoman Turks. Rising European power addressed this problem effectively and after that the capture of whites and attacks on Villages ceased. In engagements and battles many pirate ships and Turkish men of war were sunk by the British navy, as now Brittiania ruled the waves.
The capture of white slaves ceased and became sporadic, but in East Africa and the West Coast the trade in slavery continued.
