Dilip Kumar was a top hero of Mumbai films some 6 decades back. He was a Muslim from Peshawar and his real name was Mohammed Yusuf Khan. He held centre stage as the top Mumbai hero for many decades and during this period churned out many hits and acted in many memorable roles. Though Dilip acted in over 100 films and it is difficult to make a selection, yet here is a selection of his five top most films.
Incidently dilip Kumar was awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India and also the highest civilian award of the Government of Pakistan
1. Mughal-e- Azam (1960)
This film produced by K Asif was the costliest film made at that time. It was an historical drama of the Mughal period when Akbar the emperor went into a conflict with his son Salim, played by Dilip Kumar over his love affair with a courtesan played by Madhubala. Dilip played the role of Prince Salim to perfection and he brought a new dimension also to the love scenes he enacted with Madhubala. His verbal clashes and deliverance of dialogue with Akbar played by Prithviraj Kapoor form a pair to be remembered for ever. Another unforgettable scene is when Dilip expresses his love for Madhubala by caressing her with a feather. Its simply lovely.
This was the first film in color produced by veteran producer director Mehboob Khan. The film was a fantasy set in an imaginary kingdom wher kings ruled and sword fencing was the norm. Dilip Kumar played a swashbuckling swords man who wins the love of the princess played by Nadira. The film had lovely songs and Dilip Kumar's performance was par excellence. His scene where he wins the fencing match and stands before the princess is even now a delicate presentation.
This movie was released as a political satire where Dilip confronts the mafia led by veteran actor Jayant who has got a political leader murdered. The film saw Dilip in a different light as he played his role as the lover of Vijantimala and the man who confronts the mafia boss Jayant to perfection.Indidentally the villainous role played by jayant is something not seen in Hindi films. The film did not do well at the box office, but as a genre film with the trade mark of Dilip Kumar it is unsurpassable.
4. Gunga Jumna ( 1961)
This was the only film produced by Dilip Kumar himself. The story set around an innocent man who is forced to become a dacoit fired the Indian masses. The film has some of the best shots of dacoits looting running train. It also brought to the public the world of dacoits. Dilip did perhaps one of his best roles in the film and the public came away y from the theater a satisfied lot
This was his last film in which Dilip essayed a triple role. He took a hiatus from acting after this film till 1981. Consummate actor as he was he did a wonderful job of portraying all the 3 roles. This film also failed poorly at the box office but as a parting gift from Dilip Kumar it is without peer.
