The world is spinning on its axis faster than ever. There was a time when being a homosexual or a lesbian was a crime and many were jailed for it. In some countries, particularly the Islamic nations this is still in vogue. I remember in Malaysia a few years back, a cabinet minister was stripped of his rank and jailed for homosexuality. In the USA things are going to the other extreme. Maryland is a small state in the USA, but it as a percentage has a large number of black Negroes. In this state Governor Martin O’Malley on Thursday 01March 2012 signed into law a historical act that legalized gay marriages. Maryland would be the 7th state of the union to have signed into law a legal cover for a gay marriage. The governor is a Democrat and many have opposed his action. But the law will take effect only from January, 2013. The road ahead may be a little
rocky as in a similar case Maine legalized same sex marriages in 2009, but later in the same year, became the only state to overturn such a law passed by the legislature. It should not be forgotten that about 30 states have have constitutional amendments that seek to prohibit gay marriages, by defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In Maryland many African American church leaders are vocal in their opposition to gay marriages. They have submitted a draft language for a ballot referendum to overturn the bill signed into law. Black pastors in the churches in their sermons are also speaking against gay marriages. They feel it is against the spirit of Christianity. Thus there is a good chance that as and when the referendum takes place the black pastors and the Church may swing the votes against this measure. Personally I feel all this is humbug as God never envisioned a same sex marriage. No religion does as well.
