Maruti/ Suzuki 800: Is The Car Obselete

The Maruti 800 is a product of the Suzuki motor company of Japan. It was launched in 1983 and Indians who had been accustomed to direlict models like the Hindustan Ambassador and the Premier Padmini were startled as this new generation car hit the road. The 796cc, high efficient engine developed 38 BHP and with its streamlined looks and latest suspension ,the car captured the Indian Market.

Over the years the car model did not change much and what ever changes were incorporated were just cosmetic. However the product itself was good and more than held its own against all other

car manufactureres. The Government of India liberalised the car market and invited foreign car makers into India in 1992. Toyota, Honda, hyundai and others appeared on the scene. But none of them could dent the sales of the 800 which continued to rise.

One reason for the high sales was the price. Suzuki kept the price low and made

up with large numbers. No other car manufacturer could manage to market a car at the price at which the 800 was sold.In addition having had head start the Suzuki company had set up repair and service facilities in remote corners of India. This again could not be matched by the other car manufacturers. The result was that the Maruti sales continued to go from strength to strength.

However newer emmission norms proved the death knell of this car and from 01 April 2010 the sales of the car was withdrawn from 13 cities by Suzuki and replaced with the newer Alto, with a slightly higher price. But at other places the car still sells 2500 pieces every month .Thus the car may still have some life in it in India. But whatever happens this car will forever be remembered as the car that that launched the auto revolution in India.
