Hosni Mubarak Goes For Life In Jail: Politics Of Vendetta

Hosni Mubarak ruled Egypt as a dictator for over 30 years. It should have never been so long but for rigged elections with the covert support of the USA. The Arab spring, a movement for democracy soon caught on and Mubarak became a victim of it. He was ousted and the USA thought it best to support the Arab spring.
However the clamor for accountability grew shriller in Egypt and the new dispensation had no option but to put the former dictator on trial for his sins of commission and omission. He was tried on various charges including corruption.
The

trial court has now on Saturday (2 Jun 2012) convicted Hosni Mubarak on charges of causing the death of nearly 750 protestors and sentenced him to life imprisonment. It is all very well to shout that justice has been done, but is it really so? How did Mubarak cling to power for over 3 decades? I must say not his entire rule was bad. Firstly he brought stability in an unstable region and secondly he appreciated

the game of power politics and continued his peace with Israel. I am afraid both these accomplishments are on the verge of destruction as can be seen with the almost daily deaths in Cairo at the hands of the Army or other militant organizations.
Another accomplishment of Mubarak was keeping the Islamic fundamentalists at bay. They are a terrible lot and one can only remember how they assassinated Anwar Sadat at a military parade to realize their death like hold.
Mubarak is now 84 years old and aged and sentencing him to life imprisonment is not going to serve any purpose. Only this prison sentence smacks of vendetta and revenge, an emotion not supported in the Koran. The fragile peace with Israel is also at stake and with Egypt having no oil and a weak economy the future is dark and foreboding. I had written earlier that Egypt will again slide into a dictatorship. With this conviction of Hosni Mubarak, I am more than sure it will happen
