In October Herman Cain was a front runner for the Republican nomination. His past however caught up with him and details of his sexual adventures and an adulterous affair became public. It is to the vredit of Cain that he scratched from the race. Perhaps he had no other choice.
Herman Cain's going however has opened teh doors for other candidates for the Democratic nomination. Another factor is the struggle of Texas governor Rick Perry who is not thought of as a hot contender. The field has thus narrowed down to two men , both with contrasting styles who are inthe race now for the Republican party's nomination. The two men in the fray are Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
Romney is the former governor of Massachusetts, while Gingrich is the former US house of representatives speaker. They have strikingly different approaches as far as their personality, government experience and campaign organization is concerned. Romney is taking off from his 2008Presidential bid. Gingrich on the other hand is relying heavily on his tevised debate performances and the good will he had built up as a Congressional leader in the 1980s and 1990s.
With Cain out of teh race, bothy Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have had new blood cursing in their viens. Both the contenders are marking time for the Iowa caucus. That is the reason that Gigrich in a town hall meeting in New York declined to characterize the nomination as a race between him and Romney. He commented that any of the Republican contenders could get the nomination.
However for both Newt and Mitt, the ability to beat Obama will be severly tested. It will require more that an average plus effort to beat Obama. Keeping that in mind the Republican nomination is an open affair at present.
