In 1968 there were widespread protests and agitations against the then President of Pakistan , Field Marshal Ayub Khan. The agitations were spearheaded by the students and educated elite. Ayub decided that his time was up and he resigned. He hoever handed power to the Army Chief under him Yahiya Khan.
Yahiya Khan was a plain soldier and did not under stand the nuances of power and politics. He was happy initially to move around the Pakistan capital in a jeep. But he was soon confronted by a growing agitation in East Pakistan, where the Awami League a party led bySheikh Mujibar Rehman spearheaded a movement for greater representation in the Pakistan parliament and greater allocation of resources.
This was a genuine demand and Yahiya Khan agreed with it. He announced a one man one vote election. The result was that the Awami league became the largest political party in Pakistan and logically Yahiya should have called Mujibar to form the government.
Yahiya Khan on the advice of Bhutto launched a crackdown in Pakistan and Shiekh Mujibar rehman was arrested for treason. In this Yahiya showed that he was an extremely short sighted man and he could not see the gathering storm. The result of the actions of Yahiya Khan and Bhutto sealed the fate of Pakistan and led to the creation of Bangladesh. It is a fact of history that had Yahiya not listened to Bhutto, Bangladesh would not have been created.
