Forgetting The Nuclear Arsenal Of Pakistan

The world and the USA and Israel in particular is concerned about the possesion of nuclear weapons by Iran. They fear for the worst at the hands of Iran. But there is another counry which also has nuclear weapons and is also very unstable politically. It is beset by internal strife and the Pakistan Taliban and Al Qaeda are alive and kicking there. Terrorist attacks are taking place at the drop of a hat  and the entire scenerio is volatile.

Though the Pakistan leadership has not talked like the the leadership of Iran and threatened to nuke Israel, the danger here

is of a different sort. The nuclear weapons  are coveted by these Islamic extremist groups and  could fall in their hands. This is the danger, as power in Pakistan is shared between the Army and a motley civil adminstration. It is also not clear who holds the key to the nuclear button.

Pakistan went nuclear to rival India, little realizing that to seek parity with a nation 5 times the size of Pakistan is almost a pipe dream. The GDP of India is 7 times of Pakistan and the economy also much bigger. In addition

India is a practicing democracy for the last 6 decades with the civil authority firmly in control. In contrast Pakistan is dogged by  unstability with about 5 military coups having taken place and two Prime Ministers  hanged and assissinated.

This instabilty has bred a terrorist movement that would like to make Pakistan a practicing  Islamic state where the rule of the law is the Shariat. These groups would also like to enforce strict Islamic practces in the state and consider the USA as the 'great Satan'. The danger is that these groups could in the prevailing atmosphere get their hands on the nuclear weapons. Thoough Paksitan claims that tthe nuclear weapons are well safe guarded, yet one is aware that these could be hollow boasts. The fact is that parts of the Pakistan army and airforce are infiltrated by elements of al Qaeda and anything is possible.

The world and the USA need to wake up to this danger in Pakistan. The fat could be in the fire in case these nukes fall into the hands of these extremist groups.
