On 26 Dec 2011, India wil awaken to a test match between Australia and India at the MCG. This is by tradition refrred to as the 'Boxing Day test'. The Indian team is led by MS Dhoni and the Aussie captain is Clarke. The test is important as it will also showcase some veterans from both Australia and India in Sachin Tendulkar,Dravid and Ricky Pointing. it will be interesting to see how these old timers fare, though I personally feel that these war horses need to have been retired at least 2 years back to make way for younger blood.
Thetest is also significant as India have a chance to break a jinx of the last 64 years of never having won a series down under. Australia is presently on a downslide and they will be hoping they can claw their way back to the top.
The MCG does favor spin later on and that will be to India's advantage. Secondly it is not a fastwicket like Perth and that also will be to India's advantage as India does not have any express pace bowlers. Even Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are not capable of sustained speed and hostility. Much will now depend on the new spinners in the Indian team. Though I feel Harbhajan should have been taken to Australia. If old horses like Dravid and Laxman can be taken, then Harbhajan should also have been given a chance. But then these are the vageries of our cricket selection committee.
The Indian batting is strong on paper, but the same line up came a cropper in England which India lost 0-4. Tendulkar and company could not stave off defeat. However if for a change India play with determination then India can romp home a winner. But there are so many ifs and buts involved also. We can only keep our fingers crossed.
