Evaluating The 12 Bore Shot Gun

The 12 Bore Shot gun is a weapon that was a development from the old Musket.. It is weapon that is unique in the sense that it is the only gun that may have two barrels. The gun has evolved a lot from its earlier form and the modern short gun come with a lot of modifications over the earlier models.

The shotgun has a long barrel with a trigger mechanism and a stock generally made of wood. The gun uses cartridges as opposed to bullets. The ammunitation is peculiar to the gun and the cartridges are filed with lead pellets that spread

out when the gun is fired. As the pellets form a spread when fired ,the gun is used on targets that do not require a specific single bullet. Thus the weapon is ideal for bird shooting and duck shooting. It is not a weapon that is used for big game hunting.

Use of Shot Gun and its Limitations
The basic use of the weapon is for hunting. In particular its forte is shooting birds and fowl. The ammunition does not lend it for use in hunting large ferocious animals like man eaters or rogue elephants. The gun itself is a poor weapon for self protection. It is unwieldy and has no automatic mode ,hence it cannot be of much use as a weapon for self defence.
The gun can be easily

dismantled into three distinct parts. These are the barrel, the trigger mechanism and the butt or stock. It is important the gun is kept well oiled and cleaned. In particular the weapon will need cleaning after every use.The gun is manufactured in large numbers and is also relatively cheap. The gun has no self loading mechanism and after each firing has to be manually loaded. However the modern guns have an ejector that automatically pushes the spent cartridge out after it has been fired.
The 12 bore comes with single and double barrel. The double barrel is popular. But with the advent of the newer types of rifles and guns the days of the 12 bore are numbereed. However the weapon does have some use for hunting of small game and fowl.
The gun is manufactured by established manufacturers and also by individual gunsmiths. In India licensed private individuals in Jammu and Monghyr in Bihar manufacture a lot of these guns. There was a time when even the Chambal dacoits used these guns , but the advent of the rifle and the self loading gun has rendered the weapon obselete. However enthusiasts still buy the weapon as it cheap and easy to maintain.
