Englands Army To Be Pruned To 82,000.

As a soldier I was perplexed to learn that the English army of the once mighty British nation is to be reduced from 104,000 to 82,000. For a soldier and a student of history like me it brings to my mind poignant thoughts. Here was a nation with a global reach now reduced to having an army of just a little more than 2 divisions. It’s like history having come full circle and now England from a global power is reduced to little more than a regional power.

The cut is perhaps inevitable as the UK’s global role has diminished

and powers like China and Russia have come to the fore. The British Empire is also history and the age of colonialism dead and gone. That was a facet of history that was perhaps inevitable as the East and Africa had got mired in the past and they needed to be kick started forward. But one can say that the British colonists on a scale with the other European powers were more enlightened and pragmatic. They gave in equal measure to what they took in creating concepts of nationhood and modern thought.

The downsizing of the army must be a bitter pill for the English. The navy and the air force are also downsized.

Famous regiments that have lived through the pages of British history have been axed. Britain just could not keep up the pretence of being a great power. They tried it for a few years after the World War II, but Hitler hit them a body blow and sounded the end of Britain’s role as a world power. In a way Hitler achieved more after his death than when he was alive.

Britain is still a permanent member of the Security council but one can be pretty sure that in another 4/5 decades the Security council will have to be revamped to make representative the new breed of world powers who will emerge. I am afraid the UK may not be part of that scenario.

Britain had become a part of the European Union. But the EU is already gasping for breath and may not last for another 5 decades. This is part of history and the historical cycle sways to and fro. It is now moving towards the East and the new stars could be China and India. One only hopes the Brits don’t have to further downsize their army to 60,000.
