India first toured Australia under Lala Amarnath in 1947-48. India lost 4 out of the five tests played. Thus the present defeats are not the first occassion of India being thrashed. The 1947-48 team ran into the full might of Don Bradman who hit over 700 runs in the series.
India next toured Australia after 20 years under the Nawab of Pataudi. India again lost 0-4, but in the third test India almost came close to winning and lost finally by just 39 runs. Pataudi led from the front with a string of scores and apart from Jaishimah, others including ChanduBorde failed abjectly.
Another 10 years elapsed before the Indian team under BS Bedi faced Australia in a 5 test series in 1978. This was a closely fought series and India lost 2-3. But the fact is that this Australian team was a second XI as the main stars were not playing for Australia, having been contracted by kerry Packer. This defeat against a virtual second XI remains a sore point withindian supporters .
Gavaskar led India next in 1983 against Australia. This was a better tour as India drew the series 1-1. The series was however almost lost as Gavaskar after being given out LBW decided to concede the game. It was petulant behaviour and only the intervention o fthe India team mamager saved the series with india winning due to a fine bowling effort by kapil Dev. India toured Australia under Kapil Dev next but though india batted well they could not force a win and all 3 tests were drawn.
Azaruddin next led India to a 0-4 defeat in 1992. it was a dismal performance. Again India lost 0-3 under Sachin Tendulkat in 1998. it was a sad tour and Indian cricket touched rock bottom. The oonly silver lining was under Ganguly when India matched Asustralia and drew the series 1-1. Thus India have nothing much to show down under. Mostly its is a history of defeats. One wonders when this defeat culture will change.
