The Dassault Rafale( Multi Role Fighter) Is Selected By The Indian Air Force

The French have landed a coup in the world of aviation, by sealing a deal to supply 126 Dassault  Rafale multi role fighters to the Indian Air Force.  The deal envisages induction of the Rafale in 2015, with 18 aircraft beinbg delivered in flying condition. The IAF will subsequently recieve another 108 Rafales, which will be manufactured under licence by Hindustan Aeronautics at Bangalore.

The Rafale had stiff competition from the British and American aircraft. But though the British and American fighters are good,The nod went in favor of the Rafale. Perhaps political considerations also played a part as the French

are known to honor their deals. in addition the IAF has already operated the Mirage and the Ouregon right from the fifties of the last century.

The Rafale is a multi role aircraft and has a number of versions. It can also be adapted for

carriere borne operations. It is a Mach 2.5 speed plane with a delta wing configuration.  The Rafale was inducted into the French air Force in 2000 after extensive trials  right from 1986.  The aircraft has been used in the Iraq war and is also being used in Afghanistan. The Rafale is planned as the main French fighter  and will be in service till 2040.

The rafale has a range of 3700km and will incorporate the latest avionics aboard. the rafale will have the SPECTRA electronic warfare system, Optronique Secteur Frontal (OSF, Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA), called MDPU (Modular Data Processing Unit), RBE2 AA Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) making it a verastile aircraft that will add punch to the IAF. The rafale can also carry tactical nuclear bombs.
