China is in fact a country covered by bamboo curtain. A society that is strictly controlled witha one party rule. Recently a Chinese friend of mine from Calcutta who had been to China confessed to me on his return that he found the atmosphre there stifling. He also commented that personal liberty was at a premium as well.
Take the case of small arms and hand held weapons like revolvers and rifles. Such weapons can easily be possessed in India and the USA while in China they are banned. The Chinese communist party is paranoid in these matters and do notallow their citizens to own any type of fire arms. Thus even if you wish to own a revolver for sports the same is denied to you till you can satisfy the authorities.
This policy of the Chinese government to deny small arms to their citizens is a direct corollory to their fear of an uprising against them and is another aspect of their aim to control the life of their citizens. In India one can launch agitations against the government ,but in China this is treated as dissidence and could mean a one way ticket to prison.
The Chinese have a martial tradition and there was a time when society was not so controlled as it is today. But the common Chinese citizen perhaps does not understand what freedom means. Look at the way they control most of China and Tibet and one can get a complete picture. Fire arms come in the category of prohibted weapons and in China only the Police and army can own these weapons. It is afar c ry from the USA where small arms can be bought across the counter with proper identification. Why you can even own a machine gun for sporting use in the USA.
China however is a different kettle of fish and its about time the Chinese people broke up the monlithe communist party and the legacy of Mao tse tung of controlling the lives of ordinary Chinese citizens.
