The Atomic Bomb, Truman And Us Military Leaders As War Criminals

War is dirty business and the war in the East against JAPAN was a murky affair. On 6 August 1945 a B -29 Stratofortress took off to bomb Hiroshima. This plane carried an Atomic bomb and early morning on that fatefull day dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, a city of 250,000 people. The dropping of the bomb was a criminal act especially saunctioned by President Harry Truman on the advice of the the US Supreme commander in the Far East General Douglas McArthur. Before the bomb was dropped a military appreciation was presented. Truman was told it was a matter of
time before Japan capitualated. It was also pointed out to him that Japan was a defeated nation and was looking for a face saving way to surrender. However pressure from the military lobby and surprisingly the scientific community led by Albert Einstein who wanted to test the weapon and
study its effect in a war or live situation carried the day. Thus the decision to drop the bomb was taken primarily as a guinea pig experiment with the Japanese as fodder. The Tokyo war crimes assembled soon after the war and the Japanese leadership was put on trial for war crimes. However one judge from Calcutta, Justice Binodanand Pal gave a dissenting judgement. He held the entire tribunal illegal as it did not bring to trial the US leadership for dropping the atomic bomb on civilians which was against all canons of military law and humanity. The fact is the act of dropping an Atomic bomb on unarmed civilians was a war crime of great dimension, but as the victor the USA and its political military and scientific community escaped the tag of war criminals. After all the adage winner takes all holds true more than ever in this age
