For the last 10 months Syria is in the grip of a severe agitation, that has now taken the form of an insurrection. I feel most of the these persons who are opposing Assad are in a minority and Assad still has the greater support. But there is the undenying fact that the opposition to Assad is instigated by outside powers notably the USA and its allies.
One wonders as to what is the US aim, as after the overthrow of Assad there is very little chance of a friendly regime coming to power in Syria. Past experience shows like inEgypt and Iraq that the regimes that have come to power or waiting to seize power are pro Islamic in outlook and basically anti-west. Thus overhrow of Assad will not usher in a friendly regime there.
Assad probably would by now have crushed the uprising. But the men opposing Assad are being armed by
The USA has a knack of backing the wrong horses and the results have generally not been favorable to the USA. In the case of Syria as well , by backing the insurgents against Assad the USA may again be backing the wrong horse. Assad is secular and has kept the Islamists at bay. His going like in Egypt will result in a vacuum, that will be filled by extremist Muslim groups.
The USA and its allies may like to ponder over this fact.
